Radon Testing

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in rocks and soil. Because radon is colourless, odourless, and tasteless, it can only be detected through testing. Outdoors, radon typically disperses and does not pose a health risk. However, when radon enters enclosed spaces such as homes, it can accumulate to unsafe levels and become harmful to human health.

As part of the Evict Radon National Study, a limited number of free radon test kits are available to residents of the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan on a first come, first served basis. Test kits can be picked up at the municipal office Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

About the Evict Radon National Study

The Evict Radon National Study provides residents across Canada with the opportunity to test radon levels in their homes. The program is open to both homeowners and renters. Participants must agree to have their anonymous test results included in the national study database. Publicly shared results will not include names, addresses, or other identifying information.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate, residents must:

  • Own or rent a residence within the Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan
  • Provide proof of residency within the Township
  • Have a valid email address
  • Consent to participate in the Evict Radon National Study and related data collection
  • Limit participation to one test kit per residence

Please note: residents without an email address are not eligible to participate.

Important Testing Information

Radon testing is recommended between November and March, when homes are typically more sealed and radon levels are at their highest. The test kits being distributed are designed for a 91-day testing period within that timeframe.

Residents who wish to begin testing immediately may still use the same device for a longer 180-day test period. Alternatively, if the test kit remains sealed in its original plastic packaging, it can be stored and used starting in November.
