Garbage and Recycling

Waste Connections Canada collects all garbage in the Township. You can find your pick-up day on the collection calendar.

Each household can put out two normal sized garbage bags for pick-up each week.

Effective Immediately garbage MUST BE BAGGED for the safety of the collection drivers so that they do not come into contact with your garbage, containers must be lined and tied closed for '1 lift collection'. 

Businesses can put out four bags. Contact a private contractor if your business exceeds four bags of garbage a week.

Special Provisions for Individuals with Medical Conditions  This policy applies to residents with medical conditions resulting in the generation of excess amounts of non-hazardous waste which is beyond their control. This policy outlines the process for evaluating and processing requests from these individuals with respect to exemptions from the maximum weekly established limit for curbside pick-up.

Place your garbage at the road before 7:00 a.m. to avoid missing collection.

Garbage should not be placed at the road overnight due to bears and other animals.

Waste Connections Canada is not responsible for collecting your garbage if it is ripped open by animals prior to collection.

Emterra Environmental collects recycling in the Township as a contractor for the County of Peterborough. You can find your pick-up day on the collection calendar.

Each household must have two blue boxes to sort your recycling properly for pick-up each week.

Collection will occur on all Statutory and Public Holidays with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Collection on Christmas Day will be cancelled each year (i.e. will not occur at all) and collection on New Year’s Day will shift by one day, making all collections for the remainder of the week occur one day later, such that Friday’s collection occurs on Saturday.

Place your blue boxes at the road before 7:00 a.m. to avoid missing collection.

Leaf and yard waste is collected by the County of Peterborough in the Village of Keene ONLY.
If your home is not on the Peterborough County Map for pickup in Keene you may take your leaf/yard waste to the Transfer Station free of charge.

If eligible for pickup please:

1. Collect leaves, plants, brush and tree clippings in paper bags or reusable garbage containers with the lids off
2. Bundle branches no larger than 1m x 30cm (3'x1')
3. Place at the roadside before 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. 
   Collection may occur any day from Monday to Friday.

There are no limits and no tags required for leaf and yard materials.

The Township operates a transfer station at 1594 Drummond Line, Keene.

Transfer station hours are:

• Monday: 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Friday: 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Garbage MUST be in clear bags otherwise will NOT be accepted.

The GEEP recycling program accepts all electronic and electrical items from floor model televisions to cell phones to coffee makers.

The GEEP program cannot accept:

• Air conditioners
• Dehumidifiers
• Fridges/freezers
• Water coolers
• Gas powered devices

Please note these items will still be accepted as landfill, disposal fees will apply.

A green waste bin is located at the Transfer Station.

Acceptable items include:

• brush
• branches
• hedge and tree trimmings
• house and garden plants
• grass clippings and leaves
• Christmas trees with decorations removed

A textile bin is located at the Transfer Station. 

Acceptable items include:

• clothing
• bedding
• towels

All items must be in reusable condition.

A metal product bin is located at the Transfer Station. Only metal products can be left in the bin.

Please check with the attendant for a list of acceptable items.   

Rather than placing your unwanted items in the disposal bins, the lower section of the Transfer Station has an area dedicated for reuse items. Some items will require a tipping fee.

Acceptable items include:

• upholstered furniture
• mattresses
• working appliances
• wood furniture
• desks
• dressers
• tables
• chairs
• windows
• doors

If you have an item not listed above, please check with the attendant.

Placing items in the section helps the environment by not adding to landfill and allows another person to make use out of your unwanted item. 

There is no charge for collecting items from this section. 

Between 30-50% of most garbage bag content is organic material. Reduce your waste by backyard composting. 

The County sells a variety of composters as well as offering Garbage to Garden, an at home composter installation program, in the summer. 

Composting in your back yard is the easiest and most cost effective way to reduce waste from our homes.

Grasscycling is encouraged as it's an excellent way to reduce backyard waste and improve lawn health. 

The City/County of Peterborough operates a landfill at 1260 Bensfort Road, Otonabee.

The City has a list of fees and more information on their website.

Landfill hours are:

• Monday to Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
• Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
