The Township of Otonabee-South Monaghan provides curbside garbage and recycling pick-up to residents. Residents can also take items to the transfer station at 1594 Drummond Line, Keene or to the City/County landfill at 1260 Bensfort Road, Otonabee.
Peterborough County provides waste reduction services to all residents.

Waste Connections Canada collects all garbage in the Township. You can find your pick-up day on the collection calendar. Each household can put out two normal sized garbage bags for pick-up each week. Effective Immediately garbage MUST BE BAGGED for the safety of the collection drivers so that they do not come into contact with your garbage, containers must be lined and tied closed for '1 lift collection'. Businesses can put out four bags. Contact a private contractor if your business exceeds four bags of garbage a week. Special Provisions for Individuals with Medical Conditions This policy applies to residents with medical conditions resulting in the generation of excess amounts of non-hazardous waste which is beyond their control. This policy outlines the process for evaluating and processing requests from these individuals with respect to exemptions from the maximum weekly established limit for curbside pick-up. Place your garbage at the road before 7:00 a.m. to avoid missing collection. Garbage should not be placed at the road overnight due to bears and other animals. Waste Connections Canada is not responsible for collecting your garbage if it is ripped open by animals prior to collection. Emterra Environmental collects recycling in the Township as a contractor for the County of Peterborough. You can find your pick-up day on the collection calendar. Each household must have two blue boxes to sort your recycling properly for pick-up each week. Collection on Christmas Day will be cancelled each year (i.e. will not occur at all) and collection on New Year’s Day will shift by one day, making all collections for the remainder of the week occur one day later, such that Friday’s collection occurs on Saturday. Rather than placing your unwanted items in the disposal bins, the lower section of the Transfer Station has an area dedicated for reuse items. Some items will require a tipping fee. Acceptable items include:

Between 30-50% of most garbage bag content is organic material. Reduce your waste by backyard composting. The County sells a variety of composters as well as offering Garbage to Garden, an at home composter installation program, in the summer. Composting in your back yard is the easiest and most cost effective way to reduce waste from our homes. Grasscycling is encouraged as it's an excellent way to reduce backyard waste and improve lawn health. |
