Ball and Ice Hockey

The ice surfaces (skating and curling)  go in the middle of September and are removed by the end of March and are well used by the Minor Hockey teams and the Figure Skating Club.

Free public skating, sponsored by local businesses, is held every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. and Sundays 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Ball hockey is played on the pad once the ice has been removed.

Curling

Included in the complex is a two (2) sheet curling rink.  The Keene Curling Club offers memberships to mens, mixed, business ladies and ladies leagues and Bonspiels are held by these groups and are open to the patrons who wish to partiipate and show off their skills.

Cordwood Bonspiel

This is a yearly bonspiel held for children ages 4 to 13 that had its origin when artificial ice ws created at the arena in the mid 1960's.  In the earlir years of this bonspiel the children, with the help of their parens, would make thier own stones out of tree trunks.  It was quite interesting to see the size and creativity of each child's stone.  Currently the stones, still made out of wood, are provided by the organizers and are sized for each child.  This event has a draw of around 200 children and is held at the end of March, usually the last weekend before the ice is removed for the season.  If you would like your child to take part in this day, please contact Ted Eason at 295.6692.

Squirrel Creek

is a conservation area located on the Otonabee River owned by Otonabee Regional Conservation Authority (ORCA), but maintained by the township.  The gates are opened at 10:00 a.m. and locked at 9:00 p.m. on the May 24th weekend (starting Saturday, May 22, 2010) and close for the season after the Labour Day weekend.  Here you will find a public beach, two picnic shelters and two (w) ball diamonds.  The shelters and diamonds can be rented for family reunions or other functions.

Squirrel Creek also has a boat launch and is a great starting point to go off for a day of fishing or to explore the area by water.  Just remember to get back before the gates lock at 9:00 p.m..

There is no overnight camping at Squirrel Creek.
